A veteran Ethiopian singer is among an army of international artists poised to perform at an annual world music and dance festival to be held in March in the South Australian capital – Adelaide.

Artist Mahmoud Ahmed, 70, is one of Ethiopia's most prominent entertainers and is to be the first prominent Ethiopian singer to perform live to mainstream Australian audience.

The festival, known as WOMADelaide, will be held from 5 – 8 March and Mahmoud's performance is scheduled to take centre-stage on Saturday 6 March at 9pm in an event titled: “Taste the World”.

The WOMADelaide festival was first held in 1992 aiming “to entertain all age groups and people from all backgrounds”.

The festival is said to “encourage people to experience the music and cultures other than their own as a way of developing global understanding”.

Although this will be Mahmoud's first performance to a general Australian audience at a major Australian festival, he is coming to Australia now having held two major concerts to Ethiopian-Australian audiences in Melbourne in the past.

Mahmoud has been entertaining Ethiopians for decades travelling to African states, Europe, Canada, United States and Australia.

In May 2007, he was announced as the winner of the year's BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music held in London.
